Jaad Tl'aaw, Paula Varnell belongs to the G̱aw Git'ans Gitnee, Masset Inlet eagle clan, on Haida Gwaii – homeland to the Haida Nation, this archipelago is 90 nautical miles off the coast of British Columbia, and 27 nautical miles from traditional Haida territory along the coast of Alaska. Paula was born into an unbroken line of master Haida weavers and teachers, whose collective knowledge and experience has made the resurgence of Haida sail making, a possibility. She holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Northern British Columbia, carrying forward the teaching legacy of her great grandmother, Selina Harris Adams Peratrovich and her 96-year-old grandmother, Dr. Delores Churchill.
