About me
John P. McCormackwww.johnpmccormackdesign.comI've paddled the complete Canadian portion of the inside Passage solo, including a circumnavigation of Princess Royal I. and a trip from SG̱ang Gwaay to Queen Charlotte City. Our coast as you go north, reminds me of Yosemite Valley (I grew up in that park.), if it was filled by the sea, since the landforms and vegetation are similar.
Boatbuilding interests me. I've worked in a group to build 4 small boats and helped (giving 25+ Mondays to help restore the Karl and Jean, aka the Chubby Double Ender) a late Gold Rush era Australian built ship's tender at the Dolphin Club in San Francisco. This boat was the model for Ray Speck's last boat. Chairmaking interests me also, since the compound angled, compound curved structures are similar to boatbuilding. Both are intellectually challenging.
My thoughts on making generally:"I am an artist/craftsman, and a teacher of furniture design and making. I endeavor in my work to design and create beautiful functional objects. Specifically, I make things using methods that honor the material: the life of my furniture is limited by by the longevity of the wood itself. I am available for commissions for thoughtfully-designed custom furniture, small architectural interior work, and to offer private instruction at my new workshop in Port Townsend."
