About me
Since the early 1980s, master rigger Jamie White has sailed over 30,000 miles as bosun, mate, or master on square-rigged and traditionally-rigged vessels. He is currently master rigger on the 1938 topsail schooner SWIFT OF IPSWICH rig restoration, and has served as master/chief rigger or rigging consultant on the 1886 ship BALCLUTHA, 1863 barque STAR OF INDIA, 1877 barque ELISSA, topsail schooner CALIFORNIAN, galleon SAN SALVADOR, the brigantines EXY JOHNSON, IRVING JOHNSON, and MATTHEW TURNER, and the schooner PRIDE OF DANA POINT among others. Jamie led the rigging restoration of two “Clydebuilt” square-riggers still afloat: in 1995, the 1904 four-masted barque MOSHULU in Philadelphia, and later in 1998 the complete rig restoration from the deck up of the 1896 barque GLENLEE in Glasgow, Scotland.
In 2010, after serving many years as lead rigger and later historic ships rigging supervisor at San Francisco Maritime NHP, Jamie became director of 1877 barque ELISSA, where he oversaw the $2.5 million second restoration of ELISSA’s hull and decking. In 2016 he designed, supervised, and directed the $3.5 million rigging restoration of 1885 full-rigged ship WAVERTREE at shipyard in Staten Island, NYC.
