About me
Marine biologist Beth Ann Mathews is the author of the award-winning memoir Deep Waters: A Memoir of Loss, Alaska Adventure, and Love Rekindled (She Writes Press), a story of relationship and family resilience tested—and strengthened—through boating after her husband’s medical crisis. Mathews taught biology and marine mammalogy for 20 years at the University of Alaska Southeast, where she also led research on seals, sea lions, and harbor porpoises. Her second book, Between Two Lights: A Memoir of Divided Love and Adventures at Sea (SWP, Jan 2027), blends memoir and heartbreak with stories of research on whales and dolphins, teaching undergraduates from a tall-ship, women in science, and fieldwork from eastern Canada to Alaska and Hawai‘i. Beth and her husband live on Bainbridge Island, Washington, where they enjoy sailing their 42 foot Contest ketch, a 34-year family member.
