About me
Combo Choro plays acoustic Brazilian music. We play the music of Choro, the first music of Brazil, along with Samba and Baião, from the Northeast of Brazil. Choro, Portuguese for "cry" or "lament"is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre which originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro. Despite its name, the music often has a fast and happy rhythm. It is characterized by virtuosity, improvisation, and is full of syncopation and counterpoint. Choro is considered the first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music. Centrum hosts the first Choro workshop in the United States every April.
The core group is Al Bergstein on mandolin, Julian Catford guitar & Cavaquinho (Brazilian Uke) and Teresa Catford on percussion. We will be joined by special guest Jon Green on bass.
